Tigers is a film by Oscar-winning director Danis Tanovic based on the true story of a former Nestlé baby milk salesman in Pakistan called Syed Aamir Raza. This is the true story of a humble Pakistani pharmaceuticals salesman who sacrificed everything to raise an outcry against one of the world’s most powerful multinational company Nestle.
Syed Aamir Raza was a salesman who struggles to sell cheap but effective local drugs, in a market where consumers don’t trust them and believe the fancy packaging. After a lot of struggle he lands up in a multinational company Nestle in baby milk sector in 1994 at the age of 24. Nestle was already making profit in other products and made its mark in baby milk also as marketing made the Nestle’s baby formula as best alternative to breastfeeding.
Syed Aamir Raza was responsible for promoting breast-milk substitutes and infant cereals until one of his doctor friend returns from Karachi, where he has been studying social medicine, with horrifying news. They found out that the baby formula Nestle used was being diluted with filthy water, and babies are dying from malnutrition, diarrhea and dehydration. In 1997 first baby was reported dead because of Nestle’s infant formula.
When he realizes that babies are dying as a result of his work pressuring doctors to promote formula, Raza quits his dream job and demands the company stop selling the formula in Pakistan with the help of IBFAN (the International Baby Food Action Network). In 1998 Aamir had shown his evidence to the Network, who said they would publish a report if he decided he wanted to go public. Baby Milk Action and theGerman group, AGB, played key roles in this, putting Aamir in contact with Stern Magazine and ZDF television in Germany, who spent nearly a year putting together stories.
While Aamir Raza was in England to expose the corporation’s actions, it is said that his family was threatened. He had to move his family to Canada as refugees. While in the country he later missed the funerals of both his parents in Pakistan. He now lives in Toronto with his family and drives a taxi.
