You can’t buy a Rolls Royce even if you’re a millionaire.

There is a process in Rolls Royce where it is decided if the person wishing to buy it is fit enough to be its owner or not and money is not just the criteria. Rolls-Royce carries out a complete background check of you, your entire history, profile, social standing for the past many years, including your past generation. Forget about even getting a test drive.

The reason behind this process was due to the humiliation caused back in 1920.

The brand was the number-one car manufacturer in the world in the 1920s, was humiliated and upset about the Maharaja’s treatment of its cars.

There were an estimated 20,000 of the cars made before the start of World War I and about 20 percent of them made their way over to the Indian subcontinent.

It is said that Maharaja Of Patiala who visited Mayfair car showroom in the 1920s without donning his royal garb.As a result of his ‘drab’ appearance, the Maharaja was taken for a time-wasting, lookie-loo and was asked to leave the showroom by the sales men. Maharaja of Patiala is said to have shipped 50 Rolls Royce cars(No official record) to India and had them collect garbage until representatives of the company came to Patiala to personally apologise for their behaviour in a Rolls Royce showroom.

King received a telegram with apologies from Rolls Royce for the way the employees behaved towards him. The car executives pleaded for him to stop using the vehicles for transporting garbage and also sent him a gift of another six cars.

You can find another set of story where it is believed that the Maharaja of Alwar, visited London, and one day decided to walk around the city “incognito,” wearing ordinary English clothes. He asked the staff about the specifications of the Rolls Royce cars and their prices. However, the salesmen just saw a man with the face of an Indian. Ignoring his request for a test drive, the staff went so far as to rudely show the Maharaja out the door. After being humiliated the Maharaja got back to his hotel and asked for an official visit of the Indian king to the Rolls Royce showroom to be arranged. When he appeared in his formal outfit, dressed in sparkling clothes and jewelry, the Maharaja was welcomed with a red carpet and employees standing on both sides of it paying their respects to the king. He then purchased all six cars available in the showrooms.

When he returned to India, the Maharaja gave an order to the Municipality in New Delhi to use the cars for collecting garbage. So, there were six brand-new Rolls Royce models sweeping the streets of New Delhi, and carrying the garbage away. This news was spread like a fire all over the world spoiling the reputation of the luxurious brand, Rolls Royce had to apologize personally for the humiliating the Maharaja.

From then on Rolls Royce set the rules of background check and past history.
